  • New York City Police and Firemen march past ground zero on the fourth anniversary of the World Trade Center Towers collapse and terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The north tower contained several thousand tons of asbestos.  When the towers collapsed this resulted in one of the  largest single uncontrolled releases of asbestos.It can take between 10-40 years to contract cancer from asbestos.<br />

The entire community is built on top of and from the asbestos scraps and dumps from decades of production at the Shree Digvijay Cement Plant.  Almost every single residence in this and many villages and cities like this in India have asbestos cement products in them. Broken sheets of asbestos cement products can release deadly fibres into the air.

  • Suffering from asbestosis, 66-year-old Mangabhai Patel is seen on a bed gasping for air at his relatives home in Ahmedabad, India where he is living. He worked for 37 years at the Ahmedabad Electric Company (AEC) and was exposed to asbestos and has been diagnosed with Asbestosis. He is constantly gasping for air due to his severely damaged lungs. He can only walk short distances before he is nearly incapacitated from the disease which causes difficulty in breathing. After 10 years of trying to get compensation, an out of court settlement of approximately $4000.00 dollars will be paid to him in compensation.

  • The closed Turner and Newall asbestos plant in Rochdale, England seen through a fence. This was the largest asbestos product manufacturing plant in the world which is only a few miles from Manchester. This plant was owned and operated by the now defunct company Turner and Newall (T & N). The history of this plant and Turner and Newall are forever tied to the deaths of numerous workers by disease from exposure to asbestos. The other important fact to note is that this plant used chrysotile asbestos from the mines in Quebec, Canada.

She was exposed to asbestos in the late 60?s and early 70?s when she was a junior architect and visited a construction project once a month for the first year and once every three months for the remaining three years, which is considered minimal exposure relative to most cases. She has the incurable cancer mesothelioma from asbestos exposure.

  • The approximate site of the world?s first acknowledged victim of asbestosis, who was a Rochdale Turner and Newall (T&N) asbestos worker called Nellie Kershaw. She died in 1924 from asbestosis. Nellie Kershaw lies in an unmarked ?paupers? grave in Rochdale cemetery. She died at the age of 33 as a mother to two children. T&N was once the world's largest asbestos company.

  • Helen Winning, age 56 who lives in Glasgow, Scotland. She worked at the Templeton Carpet factory in Glasgow. She started there in 1964 straight out of school and started off as an office junior. She did not work in the production area except going out on the shop floor to get administration forms completed from the production line managers. She said the factory was massive and many people worked there. At the beginning of the 1980?s she moved to work for an insurance broker and held several secretarial jobs until getting a job in 2001 at the University of Glasgow. In 2006 she was diagnosed with mesothelioma from being exposed to asbestos at the carpet factory. Her mother was a weaver at Templetons before she was born, she died from mesothelioma in 1994.
